National Lottery Facts
The UK National Lottery launched on 14th November 1994, with the first draw taking place on 19th November the same year.
It is open to all players aged 18 and over.
Draws for the National Lottery are held twice a week - on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.
Any prizes claimed are tax-free.
Since launching, the National Lottery has raised over £42 billion for charity.
The largest ever National Lottery payout was made on 19th July 2022, when a single ticket holder scooped £195 million .
The draw expanded from 49 numbers to 59 in October 2015, with the idea that it would cause more frequent rollovers and ultimately create bigger jackpots.
The jackpot can roll over a maximum of five times. It becomes a Must Be Won Jackpot on the sixth draw - if no-one matches the full set of numbers still, the total jackpot will be shared between all winning tickets. This means that a winning ticket usually worth £30 for matching three numbers could pay out £100.
Since starting in 1994, the National Lottery has created over 7,000 new millionaires.
You cannot play the Lottery at Jackpotjoy.
