Bingo Generations
Beano, or bingo as it's known today, dates back to1530, just after Italy introduced the lottery. Beano was first played at carnivals, and gained its name from the apparatus used to play the game, beans. Players would mark off the numbers on their tickets with beans and the first player with all their numbers marked would win. The game soon became popular, and this led to its commercialisation. It was when a player excitedly and accidentally shouted out “Bingo“ instead of Beano, that the term bingo came into being. Edwin S. Lowe, a toy maker, recognised the potential of the game and propagated it in the American market.

The game of bingo has proved extremely popular internationally, and was even adopted by churches as a fundraiser for charities. However, problems with the game soon arose after a priest realised that every game could potentially have several winners. This posed a problem for fundraising and soon a combination of tickets that prevented multiple winners became imperative. A mathematician from Columbia University named Carl Leffler was hired by Edwin S. Lowe to produce combinations that would prevent multiple winners per game. The mathematician subsequently produced 6,000 variations to ensure that games wouldn't feature multiple winners.
From then on there was no stopping the game. Several variations, such as 75 ball bingo and 80 ball, bingo were invented, over and above the traditional 90 ball bingo. Pattern playing and line elimination both flourished and players enjoyed both with equal zeal. Bingo soon became a more interactive game; dedicated halls and clubs soon cropped up while casinos and clubs adopted the game to attract more clientele.
Today, online bingo has formed a large part of the revenue generated by the game and is proving popular amongst Web users as they play from the comfort of their own homes. Bingo has carved a place of prominence for itself and is by far one of the most popular games played in modern society. Even with the prevalence of video games and television, the popularity of Bingo continues to grow each day, appeals to all generations and walks of life.
